Enclosure selection is usually reduced to “as long as the devices fit”. But the wrong body trips drives in the first summer heat, leaves no room at the first addition and shortens board life in dusty air. The right choice comes down to four headings.
IP rating follows the environment
- IP54 — the common choice for normal production areas and dusty environments.
- IP65 and above — washdown food plants and outdoor applications.
- IP20/IP30 — clean, enclosed electrical rooms only.
- A higher IP class makes heat rejection harder and must be assessed with the climate calculation.
Size: the layout, not the device area
When laying out devices on the mounting plate, the manufacturer's minimum clearances, trunking widths and access needed for maintenance all count. Drives specify top and bottom ventilation gaps in their catalogue; closing them derates the device. As a rule of thumb, leaving around 20% of the rail free covers the addition planned two years out without buying a new enclosure.
Plan cable entry from the start
Whether cables enter from below or above, the gland plate size and the bending radius must be settled before ordering. Openings cut later reduce the protection class and weaken the body. With large power cables, bending radius often dictates the enclosure depth.
Do not order before checking the heat load
Add up the devices' power losses, subtract what the enclosure surface can reject naturally, and select a fan or cooler for the remainder. In drive-heavy panels, skipping this calculation brings “unexplained stoppages” in summer. We prepare the calculation free of charge on request.
Frequently asked questions
Painted steel or stainless?
In normal production areas powder-coated steel is enough. In washdown food plants, areas with chemical vapour and outdoors, stainless is preferred; the price difference stays below the cost of early replacement due to corrosion.
Does the mounting plate come with the enclosure?
With standard bodies it is usually included, but size and thickness vary by model. The quotation states the mounting plate, gland plate and door accessories line by line.
Should the door open left or right?
Escape direction and the operator's position decide it; an open door must not block the walkway. If the hinge side is not stated when ordering, the manufacturer's standard is supplied and it cannot always be changed on site.
What matters if the panel goes outdoors?
Beyond the IP class, consider solar radiation, condensation and corrosion. A sun canopy, a heater against condensation and, in coastal areas, a stainless body or suitable paint system are recommended.
