Current-carrying capacity
Catalogue ratings assume reference conditions. Ambient temperature, installation method and grouping reduce them; derating factors must always be applied.

Voltage drop
On long runs the deciding criterion is usually voltage drop rather than current. A limit around 3% for lighting and 5% for power circuits is accepted.

Screening
The motor cable on a drive output should be screened with the screen earthed at both ends. Otherwise noise appears on sensor and communication lines and RCDs trip without reason.

Termination quality
Lugs, tubing and crimping tools must match the conductor size. Incorrect crimping raises contact resistance, causing heating and eventual failure.

- Sizing on current alone without checking voltage drop.
- Exceeding the fill ratio in trunking, leaving no room for later additions.
- Earthing the screen at one end only and never solving the EMC problem.
- Postponing terminal marking until it never happens.

- Voltage drop
- The percentage of voltage lost along the run. Limits of around 3% for lighting and 5% for power circuits are accepted.
- Derating factor
- Reduction of current capacity for ambient temperature, installation method and cable grouping.
- NYY / NYA / NYAF
- NYY is a fixed-installation power cable, NYA a single-core rigid conductor and NYAF a flexible conductor used inside panels.
- Screen and earthing
- The conductive layer that limits interference on drive output cables. The screen must be earthed at both ends.
Frequently asked about Cable and Connection
Can I buy cable by the drum?
Yes. Standard sizes ship from stock by the metre, and project quantities by the drum. For large quantities we give a date based on the production schedule.
When is halogen-free cable required?
It can be a specification requirement on escape routes, enclosed car parks, data centres and busy indoor spaces. It is preferred because it produces less smoke and corrosive gas in a fire.
Do you calculate the cable size?
Yes. Send the load, run length and installation method and we check current capacity, voltage drop and short-circuit withstand together, then recommend the size. There is no separate charge for this.
Can I order terminals and lugs on the same order?
Yes. With Onka rail terminals, Eurowest lugs and Konsan tubing and marking materials we consolidate the whole in-panel connection onto one delivery note, and include matching lug and crimping tool suggestions in the quotation.
Which cable colours should be used?
The protective conductor is green-yellow and the neutral light blue as standard. Brown, black and grey are common for phases. In control circuits, separating colours by voltage level makes fault-finding easier.
